Summary
Typescript copies of letters of the Blackford family. Includes a typescript copy of Mary B. Blackford's "Notes Illustrative of the Wrongs of Slavery," the original of which is accessioned under #5088.
Letters describe family life, social events and political news. William Willis Blackford (1831-1905) writes of his work for various turnpike and railroad companies, especially the Southwestern Turnpike Co. and the Virginia and Tennesssee Railroad. In 1852 he describes a trip to Canada and New York.
Letters from William Willis Blackford (1831-1905), Charles Minor Blackford (1833-1903), Benjamin Lewis Blackford (1835-1908), and Launcelot Minor Blackford (1837-1914) describe student life at the University of Virginia, various professors, residents of Charlottesville, and the temperance movement. Some letters of Mary Berkeley (Minor) Blackford (1802-1896) reflect her anti-slavery views.
Civil War service and camp life is described in the Blackford boys' letters. Charles Minor Blackford, a judge advocate general with Longstreet's Corps., describes his duties in Virginia and Tennessee. Launcelot Minor Blackford served first in the Rockbridge Artillery and then as a clerk to Longstreet's military court, seeing action in Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee. Benjamin Lewis Blackford served as a lieutenant of engineers stationed in North Carolina. His letters describe North Carolina and Wilmington, N.C., and blockade runners. Letters after the war describe civilian conditions in Virginia and Tennessee.
Other correspondents include: William Matthew Blackford (1801-1864); John Minor (d.1862); Robert Garlick Hill Kean (1828-1898); John Barbee Minor (1813-1896); and, George Washington Bethune (1805-1862).
