Summary
The correspondence of Jefferson, Proctor Nelson Barksdale, and Bursar Alexander Garrett concerns the construction of the University of Virginia. Most of the letters deal with the employment of skilled craftsmen to do brick laying, carving, carpentry and painting, and the cost of their labors. A few of the letters discuss the library and the first professors.
Of interest is a letter, 1822 December 7, Peter Maverick to Jefferson, stating that 200 copies of the engraved ground plan were dispatched to Bernard Peyton and that Maverick will retain the plate against future orders.
