Notes
  • Creation of machine-readable version: Science Fiction Round Table.
  • Conversion to TEI.2-conformant markup: Elizabeth Styron, University of Virginia Library Electronic Text Center.
  • Beginning with Chapter 134, the Roman numerals in the chapter heads are inaccurate for the remainder of the text. The correct chapters numbers have been added to the heads.
  • There is no chapter 41, 42, or 43 to Varney, the Vampyre; or, The Feast of Blood, thought to have been written by James Malcolm Rymer and published by E. Lloyd, Salisbury Square. The last actual chapter was Chapter 40: The Popular Riot. -- Sir Francis Varney`s Danger. -- The Suggestion and Its Results. The next will be Chapter 44: Varney`s Danger, and His Rescue. -- The Prisoner Again, and the Subterranean Vault.
  • These chapter omissions are most probably due to a chapter numbering error in which CXXIV was accidentally transformed into CXXVI, probably during typesetting. Later, however, another chapter numbering error.
  • *Most sources attribute the original 1847 work to either Thomas Peckett Prest or to James Malcolm Rymer. In this presentation of the electronic version, we have attributed Varney to Thomas Prest though the digitizers at the Science Fiction Round Table attributed the work to Rymer in their corrective notes.
