Summary
Linda Watson, director of the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library begins the program with welcoming remarks. Drawing upon the theme of "building bridges" from the past to the present, she presents an overview of significant events, people and developments in the library's history spanning the decades from the founding of the University by Jefferson in 1819 to the present; future plans for new and enhanced library services are briefly noted.
Dr. Don Detmer, vice-president of the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center focuses his remarks on current projects in progress at the University Health Sciences Center, and on future plans for program and facility expansion and growth.
Following an introduction by Ms. Watson, Dr. Donald A. B. Lindberg, director of the National Library of Medicine, cites Thomas Jefferson's writings and speculates what Jefferson would have thought about computers at the University of Virginia, his "academical village." He also provides a brief look at NLM's facilities and programs and outlines its major goals and plans for the next decade.
