Summary
The collection consists primarily of English legal and business documents. Many are 17th century copies of earlier English and French documents probably done by either clerks or students.
The legal papers, 1737-1755, of [Dr. Charles?] Penfold consist of notes concerning legal precedent in probate cases, witness testimony, defamation of character, debt obligation, validity of wills, and marriage cases including alimony, nullification, and marriage of minors.
The collection also contains a folder of legal decrees and notes concerning ecclesiastical matters, 1550-1731, particularly regarding "foreign" churches.
A folder of legal decrees and notes on nautical maters, 1690-1741, chiefly concerns pirates, privateers and prizes, including the case of the "Biddleford" which had captured the Swedish "Gottenburgh."
Additional materials include a digest of miscellaneous laws, post 1667, concerning administrations, legacies, nautical matters, and marriage.
Letters, 1744-1745, Roger Comberback to Robert Dodsley concern a translation of Cicero published anonymously by Dodsley as "The Oration for M. Marcellus."
A Lancaster, Pa., legal document, 1753, is signed by Pennsylvania signer George Ross.
Letters, 1786, Charles Butler to an unnamed recipient concern a petition to Parliament for the relief of Roman Catholics together with a fragment of an indifferent reply on one verso.
A letter, 1886 July 10, from Sir Leslie Stephen requests an unnamed correspondent to submit his articles to the Dictionary of National Biography.
Other correspondents include Addington Davenport, David Jamison, J. Ross Mackye, and John Tharpe.
A few printed and illustrative items include a fragment of "De Illustribus Virus"; an engraving of Mr. Simmons as Abel; and two woodcut illustrations for poetry by Ralph Hodgson.
