Summary
The collection contains correspondence, business and legal papers, photographs and printed material of the Barhnart family of Augusta County, Va., and chiefly of George Gray Barnhart and his siblings and children.
George Gray Barnhart's correspondence includes letters, 1926-1937, from his son Jennings Dodd Barnhart who ran away from home and wrote of his travels, various jobs, and life in the army. Letters, 1935-1949, from Barnhart's daughter Marjorie Anne Barnhart Bradford and her husband concern high school and Brevard College and U.S. Army service. Letters from Barnhart's brothers discuss Jennings and his whereabouts. Letters from other family members convey news of family, friends, and local events including sale of land to the Shenandoah National Park.
Business papers of the Barnhart, Gentry and Harris families concern the management of Arbor Hill Farm, Apple Ridge Fruit Farm, apple growing, mountain land owned by the family and settlement of the estates of Henry George Barnhart and John A. Harris. With these are deeds, indentures, rental agreements, tax records, and surveys of Augusta County property.
Single items of interest include an 1850 appraisal listing slaves, goods and stock; a surveyor's notebook, 1879-1884, kept by Henry George Barnhart; an indenture, 1889, purchasing land lost by an African-American for non payment of taxes; and a letter from Henry D. Flood, 1917, concerning efforts to keep the United States out of the European war.
Topical files contain correspondence and documents pertaining to a child abuse charge brought against George Gray and Ola Palmer Barnhart by the brother of his first wife.
Methodist Episcopal Church, South, related papers include deeds, 1870, 1879, for the Round Hill Church, a visitation record, and correspondence pertaining to the New Hope Circuit Quarterly Conference
There is also a deed, 1809, for land sold to Lutheran and Presbyterian trustees for a joint meetinghouse.
Additional topics include the Crimora-New Hope Road; Randolph Macon College; George Gray Barnhart's objection to the acquisition of his land by the Skyline Drive with a letter to Harry F. Byrd and Byrd's reply; and the Virginia Forest Service.
Miscellaneous printed material includes a missionary booklet "Japan Progress and Outlook" by Thomas H. Haden.
