Special record file concerns integration at the University of Virginia in the early 1950s and the desegreation of the public schools in 1959. Included are a letter re the graduate school application of an African-American woman; letters re the photographing of Gregory Swanson and Walter Ridley for a news story; a letter, 1955, from Sarah-Patton Boyle regarding her Saturday Evening Post article; and, two pages of notes on "Negroes in the University of Virginia" giving breakdowns by schools.
The group also contains a statement on the withholding of state funds to public school systems choosing to integrate; a statement signed by University of Virginia faculty members on the public school crisis; and a statement by Colgate W. Darden on the crisis in Charlottesville, Va.
