Abstract
Considerable research effort has been concentrated to the problem of developing techniques for achieving high reliability of critical data in distributed systems. One approach is to use replication. Replicated data is stored redundantly at multiple sites so that it can be used by the user even if some of the copies are not available due to failures. This paper introduces a scheme for maintaining consistency and improving availability of replicated data in distributed systems. A multiversion technique is used to increase the degree of concurrency. To reduce the storage requirement and communication overhead, multiple versions are maintained only at read~only sites.
