Abstract
Chapter 1 includes an overview of the reactivity arenes as synthons in traditional organic chemistry. Typical reactivity of arenes, such as anisole and aniline require harsh reagents to overcome their aromatic stability and often generate aromatic products. Methods to overcome the aromatic stabilization commonly employ transition metals. This review will focus on methods that employ -coordination for the activation of anisole and aniline, specifically  6 -coordination of arenes to electron-deficient metal centers and  2 -coordination to electron-rich metal fragments.
