Summary
Byzantium, Constantinople, Istanbul. One place has been the capital city of three empires - Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. Each has brought its own faiths, and each has left its mark on architecture, traditions and on the communities who still populate this vast modern metropolis. In this series, Simon unveils Istanbul's strange and complex past in all its vibrancy and colour against the backdrop of this modern, living city. Its history is an incredible three millennia long epic that stretches from the foundation of the Greek state of Byzantium, through the great age of Constantine, ending with the story of Istanbul, the magnificent Ottoman capital. Deciphering the city as an historian, while travelling with the enthusiasm of a tourist, Simon digs down into the historical strata of this unique place as he visits the Byzantine churches, built on the site of Greek temples, only to be later converted to Ottoman mosques. It is a journey through the history of world faith within the walls of a single city.
