Summary
The domestic cat is a contradiction. No other animal has developed such an intimate relationship with humans while at the same time demanding, and getting, such independence of movement and action. The cat leads a double life. In the home it is an overgrown kitten, gazing up at its human owners. Outside, it is fully adult, its own boss, a free-living wild creature. And when it sharpens its claws on your doorpost, it is marking its territory in the same way a jaguar in the wild scratches a tree. So why are domestic cats tame at all? The main reason seems to be that it treats its human owner as a pseudoparent. A kitten looks to its mother to feed, clean and protect it. As a human owner continues to do this for their pet long after its kitten days are over, the domesticated animal never fully grows up. And when an owner strokes the cat's fur, the sensation is much the same as, for example, a lioness licking her cubs. From the pet on your lap to the solitary stray prowling the city at night and the colonies of truly wild cats in London,Venice and Rome, these cute clever creatures are just smaller versions of the tiger, the panther or even the king of beasts itself, the lion.
