Tiers Without Tears

Buffum, Austin G; Kanopy (Firm)

Summary
In this breakout session from the professional learning communities at Work Institute in Boston, Massachusetts (August 28, 2009), Austin Buffum uses engaging stories from his experiences in and out of the classroom to explore how response to intervention (RTI) works in real-life applications. Since RTI shifts the responsibility for helping all students become successful from special education teachers to the entire staff, Buffum argues that RTI is most effective when implemented on the foundation of a professional learning community (PLC). In this process, the three big ideas of a PLCa focus on learning, a collaborative culture, and a focus on resultsare critical. RTI is not just about meeting federal mandates or raising test scores, but rather, about ensuring high levels of learning for all students. In successfully implemented RTI programs, students receive interventions in a timely, systematic fashion that allows them to smoothly transition between a classroom with high-quality instruction (Tier 1), supplemental instruction (Tier 2), and intensive interventions (Tier 3), based on their needs: tiers without tears.
