Abstract
Advanced feedback control approaches offer the potential to significantly improve the safety and performance of next-generation aerospace systems. Intelligent and adaptive systems can compensate for unexpected failures and damage, greatly reducing the likelihood that these events result in injury, loss of life, or loss of the vehicle. These systems can also provide enhanced capabilities such as allowing vehicles to operate autonomously, and adapt to changing mission requirements and environmental factors. Despite many successful demonstrations of autonomous and intelligent control laws in simulations and flight tests, the difficulty associated with the verification, validation, and testing of adaptive and nondeterministic systems poses a significant barrier to their use in safety-critical systems.
