Abstract
This thesis examines the segregation academy movement in Virginia from the 1950s to the 1980s. Ultimately, it argues that the framework of de facto segregation in private education is a fallacy. The state of Virginia, along with local county governments, has supported the development and maintenance of white flight academies financially, legally, and rhetorically since their inception.
