Summary
Reports the average household size in owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing units in the United States at the national (including Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico), state, and county level. These averages are obtained by dividing the total number of people reported living in owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing units by the number of owner-occupied and renter-occupied housing units, respectively. The United States Census of Population and Housing counts every resident in the United States every 10 years, as mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution. The data collected by the decennial census are used to determine the number of seats each state has in the US House of Representatives and to allocate federal funds to local communities. The Demographic Profile Summary File presents 100% of data obtained in the 2010 decennial census and provides details about race and Hispanic groups, age, sex, and housing status of the US population. The profiles are released on a state-by-state basis for each of the 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico.
