Abstract
This dissertation comprises four studies examining various aspects of adolescent literacy, in particular dimensions of reading attitudes and the relationships of these dimensions to gender, culture, age, and achievement. The studies include: 1) Measuring adolescents' attitudes toward reading: A classroom survey, 2) Reading attitudes of middle school students: Results of a U.S. survey, 3) Motivational terminology in reading research, and 4) Structural relationships between Korean adolescents' reading attitudes and achievement. These investigations build on the findings of previous inquiry into affective aspects of adolescent literacy and contribute to the development of new theories, assessments, and practices.
