Abstract
This thesis exams a social literary club founded in 1886. The Southern Society functioned as a forum for Southern culture within the larger society of New York, and was part of a self-conscious attempt by these people to preserve a distinctive Southern identity. An examination of their backgrounds and the institution that they created can thus give revealing insights into the "Southerner as American" during a vital period in Southern and American history.
