Summary
Both before and after 15 minutes of adaptation under water, 20 right-handed and 20 left-handed or ambidextrous subjects made size matches to standard rectangles and were tested for hand-eye coordination. Nearly all showed a reduction in the amount of distortion to position after adaptation with no significant differences as a function of handedness. In other respects, however, the two groups showed great dissimilarities. The results for the right-handers were consonant with previous reports of a negative correlation between magnitudes of adaptation to size and distance, but this was not true for the left-handers. The effect of previous diving experience also differed for the two groups. Finally, the left-handers consistently showed increased distortion in the perception of size after adaptation, but the right-handers did not. Thus, only the left-handers showed true counter-adaptation (increased distortion after adaptation) but only the right-handers showed negative correlations between two modalities of adaptation.
