Notes
Text was printed simultaneously in both English and French, in 1804, but was not published at that time because of the author's death. The sheets were purchased by M. Bertrand, who "reserved 100 copies of the English and 300 of the French edition, and made waste paper of the remainder." -- Cf. Auction house description which is laid in slipcase.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: Text bound in 1 vol., without t.p. for 2nd volume. Contemporary marbled boards, with calf backstrip and corners. Pencilled note tipped in text volume: "This book and the Atlas accompanying it are very rare, since only one hundred copies in English were sold by the notary in charge of Collot's estate. See page iii. This copy came from the library of M.L. Clark and was formel=rly the property of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition." Another pencilled note on front flyleaf "The Atlas to this work is No. 110 of the library catalogue of M.L. Clark. Bookplate of Henry H. Vail. Paul Mellon bequest, May 12, 2000.
