From Draw Sheet, January, 1982, p. 2: "Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Opens[.] "Nurse Cynthia Davison cuddles one of the first customers of the hospital's new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU opened on Dec. 14 with space for eight children ranging in age from newborn to 16 years. "The unit is staffed by 22 nurses, with room for 10 more. 'Our goal is to take care of patients' needs for a week or less of intesive monitoring,' said Dr. Tom Massarro, medical director of the unit. "'Since UVa Hospital is a referral center for the entire state and the Surgical and Medical Intensive Care Units are full to the gills, we really needed this unit,' said Jane Childs, unit supervisor. "The unit is the fifth intensive care unit in the hospital."
