From the Draw Sheet, September 1973, p. 3, article "Know Your Administrator," which reads (in part): "John F. Harlan, Jr., Director of the University Hospital, is a native of Charlottesville. A graduate of Lane High School, he received a B.A. degree in psychology from the University of Virginia and completed graduate study in hospital administration at the Medical College of Virginia. "After 14 years of experience in hospital administration here, first as an Administrative Assistant, then Assistant Director and later Associate Director, Harlan was appointed Director in 1965 -- at that time one of the youngest directors of a major hospital in the U.S. "As Director, he has the responsibility for the administration of the University Hospital and the Children's Rehabilitation Cdenter. The Director must see that sound management principles are applied to the overall Medical Center programs to assure that adequate medical care is provided as economically as possible. "The Director is concerned with basic administrative processes of planning, staffing, coordinating, reporting, budgeting and directing. Supervisory control is exercised over all administrative phases through staff meetings and individual conferences...."
