UVa Medical School, School of Medicine, Faculty, 1942, From the Bulletin of the University of Virginia Medical School and Hospital, Fall 1942: "Although Dr. Halstead S. Hedges retired as Professor of Ophthalmology in 1938 he has continued in private practice since that time.... Dr. Hedges entered private practice in Charlottesville in 1899 and was made Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology under Dr. Paul B. Barringer who had taught Ophthalmology along with his course in Physiology. In 1905 he was appointed Professor of Diseases of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. Shortly after Dr. Robert French Compton became associated with him the department was divided and Dr. Compton was made Professor of Diseases of the Ear, Nose and Throat. Dr. Hedges retained the Eye Professorship and held this chair with honor and distinction until he retired in 1938."
