Summary
From excerpt: The Olympic Torch Relay made a special stop at the Rotunda June 21, 1996 on its way to Atlanta for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games beginning July 19. Stanardsville volunteer fire chief Doug Clay, above center, one of a dozen community heroes named by the United Way, carried the torch up the Lawn and lit the cauldron. After a brief ceremony, UVa social worker and former Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Theresa Andrews took the torch back down the Lawn as it headed for Fridays after Five on the downtown mall.
