Summary
Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the University June 15, 1994 as part of their 15-day goodwill tour of the United States. Following their welcome, the imperial couple, accompanied by Governor and Mrs. George F. Allen, were given a brief tour of the lawn. The Emperor expressed interest in the gardens' flowers and symmetry. After the tour, the royal party attended a private luncheon in the Rotunda hosted by University President John T. Casteen III and his wife. Earlier in the day, the Emperor and Empress visited Monticello.
