From excerpt on photo: Twentieth Anniversary --- On June 26, 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed in San Francisco. Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., secretary of state and chairman of the United States delegation, signed for this country as President Harry S. Truman (left) and other members of the delgation looked on. The next day President Truman appointed Stettinius the first United States representative to the new international organization. From 1946 to 1949, Stettinius was Rector of the University of Virginia, where selections from his papers are currently on exhibit.
