From back of photo: University of Virginia replaces Lawn railings - According to Thomas Jefferson's plans, white wooden railings of Chinese Chippendale design originally ringed the University of Virginia Lawn. Many of the original railings rotted and were replaced with cast iron railings of a non-Jeffersonian design. Now the University is restoring the Lawn railings to their original look. The metal railings, shown to the left and right of Pavilion VII, are being replaced with wooden railings of Jeffersonian design, like those shown on the balcony of the pavilion.
