Description
Taft's visit to UVa and Monticello. Notation on back, "Robert A. Taft, senator from Ohio, left, and T.V. Smith, congressman from Illinois, who spoke before the Virginia Institute of Public Affairs July 14, 1939. Taft and Smith had delivered a series of radio debates, twelve I think, over Columbia B.S. during the spring and early summer, and when I invited them down to Charlottesville for the Institute I arranged for them to add a thirteenth to the series which was carried over some CBS stations after their set addresses. This picture was made before the mike by a photographer who did such a bad job that I could make no use of his prints." [narrator unknown]
