  • Consists of one folded sheet (4 p.), unbound.
  • Written by Jefferson, and very likely printed in Paris in 1786, at his request, by Philippe-Denis Pierres, the printer who was engaged by Jefferson to print the 1st edition of Notes on the State of Virginia (1784-1785). The text is set in the same type font as the English editions, with the same decorative rule, same line length, same number of lines per page, etc. Possibly also translated by Jefferson. The leaflet is mentioned in a letter from Jefferson to James Madison, December 16, 1786. -- Notes by David Whitesell.
