Summary
The papers consist primarily of personal and family correspondence; photographs; news clippings; financial information; genealogy; and memorabilia. Much of this collection documents the family's prominence in civil rights issues in Virginia including Alice Stuart's attempted enrollment in the University of Virginia, her brother James Jackson's founding of the first African American boy scout troop in Virginia; and her cousin Ada Fisher's picketing of lunch counters in Richmond department stores. Also of interest are her sister Clara Jackson Brown's accounts of foreign travels and the exclusions and prejudices witnessed abroad.
There are a few items relating to Jackson Pharmacy, Richmond, Va. Other miscellaneous and individual items of interest include teaching materials, a speech by Sing Sing warden Lewis E. Lawes; Julian T. Houston, Jr.'s toast to Nelson Mandela; an account of John Garland Pollard's treatment of James Jackson at his Eagle ceremony; Alice Jackson's letter to the NAACP after her rejection by the University of Virginia, transcripts of Alice Jackson's grades at Virginia Union University, Smith College, Columbian, University and the University of Southern California; a manuscript of Alice Jackson on Segregation/Integration; and a photograph of her with Eleanor Roosevelt.
Correspondents include Clara Brown Jones, Clara Jackson Brown, Clara Louise Kersey Jackson, Mary Elisabeth Johnson
