Manuscripts of the Rives Family include papers of William Cabell Rives, Sr., Minister to France and U. S. Senator and Representative; diaries of Mrs. W. C. Rives, papers of Wlliam Cabell Rives, Jr. covering farming operations at Castle Hill and business matters, papers of Alfred Landon Rives, railroad, mining, canal, and harbor engineer in the U.S., Mexico, and Panama, papers of Amelie Rives Troubetzkoy. Correspondents include Thomas Walker Gilmer, James Madison, Edmund Pendleton, John Taylor and John Tyler.
Of interest are a set of drawings of European bridges ordered by Alfred L. Rives, with an accompanying inventory. There are also drawings of the Potomac aqueduct and Potomac River bridges, including one crossing at Alexander's Island (now Columbia Island).
