A catalogue of the books in the University of Virginia Library in the hand of John Vaughan Kean, the first University Librarian. A tally on the title page of the volume lists "168 folios, 388 4tos, 1609 8vos, 171 12mos et infra. [total] 2338 in 526 articles. By another computation 2,436 vols."
Kean classified the books in the library under "the three faculties of Memory, Reason, Imagination." Memory is divided between Civil and Physical history, with subdivisions 1-16. Reason encompasses Philosophy, with subdivisions 17-28. Imagination includes Fine Arts, with subdivisions 29-41. Subdivision 42, "Polygraphical" is listed across the three faculties.
